One highlight came when our team decided to serve those who had served us all week. Our men walked several miles to the twice-a-week market to purchase local food supplies, including fresh vegetables and eight live chickens, then cooked and served a meal for our Haitian friends. Lacking LP gas for the inside stove, we gained an appreciation of what it means to cook for a large group over an open charcoal fire on the ground.

While we prepared dinner, the women of our team pampered the Haitian women who had cooked for us. They washed and massaged feet, gave manicures and pedicures, and smothered the Haitian ladies with love. Their faces glowed with joy as they received this outpouring of love.

We saw God at work – Our God who works in and through ordinary, flawed sinners in Lexington, KY is the same God I saw at work in Haiti. He loves all of his people and entrusts us with the task of sharing the Good News with everyone, especially with those in hopeless situations and the unreached people groups throughout our planet.

My Moses moment – Yvan introduced us to a woman whose husband had not left his house in six months – since the death of their 24-year-old son in the earthquake. On Saturday morning, five men from our team set out with two guides to visit and pray for Mr. Toussaint. The views as we ascended the mountain were amazing, but what we thought would be a two-hour climb took almost twice that long. We grossly underestimated how much bottled water to take, and had only one bottle each. Several times I became so light-headed that I had to sit down for fear of falling and rolling down the mountain.

This climb pushed me to limits I didn't know I had. I didn't know how much the amputation of the toes on my left foot had affected my balance, and I didn't know how out of shape I was until my thighs cramped into solid knots. My four brothers showered me with grace, love and encouragement.

After 3½ hours we reached the last and steepest stage of our climb. Deciding it was best for me not to go on, the guides and team members left me at the home of an aunt of one of our guides. Her hospitality stunned me. While I rested outside on a handmade wooden chair, she brought a mat, blankets and pillows and made a bed for me. What a gift. I drifted off to sleep praying for the team to have some great prayers with Mr. Toussaint and thanking the Lord for such lavish hospitality.

When the team returned and we headed down the mountain, I felt somewhat like Moses, who got to see the Promised Land but was not able to go there. On my next visit to Bayonnais I am determined to reach the top of that mountain!

On Monday I got to meet Mr. Toussaint when he accepted the team's invitation and joined us for lunch. Our prayers were answered! His beaming smile affirmed that our trip was not in vain.

Nothing you do for the Lord is useless – One of my favorite scriptures is "So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless" (1 Corinthians 15:58, NLT). Due to a delay by the well-drilling contractor, our team did not get to build the fresh-water well we had planned, yet our trip was worthwhile. Every encounter – every smile, hug, laugh, song, game, wave of the hand, expression of love and act of worship – made this trip a worthy calling.

We cannot unsee what we've seen – We saw a beautiful landscape unlike what I had expected, and thousands of people. Many of them looked at our bus and its passengers with blank, empty, hopeless faces. Others had big smiles beaming with hope. On our return trip to PAP I saw the countryside, cities and people with new eyes. I saw every person as a unique creation of God, who yearns to be in relationship with each one. My heart, mind and soul were seeing a world full of God-sized opportunities.

God can, God does, and God will – Six months after the devastating January 12 earthquake, Port-au-Prince still looked as if the quake had just happened. Please pray for the Haitian government leaders as they tackle the staggering work of rebuilding.

God can fix Haiti, God does bring hope to hopeless people in hopeless situations, and God will deliver Haiti from the vise-grip of Satan.
